When it became apparent the Dole had assembled enough support in the Republican party to get the 1996 nomination, I almost resolved not to vote. It was only the the fact that Clinton was virtually destroying the institution of the presidency, and doing almost unlimited damage to the nation, that made me change my mind and vote for Dole. I still am convinced that I would have been extremely disappointed with a Dole administration-which is why so much of the Republican base sat out that year.
