Actually, some very smart movies have done extremely well in the last few years, like "American Beauty", "As Good As It Gets", "The Gladiator", "Life is Beautiful", and "Rushmore" (there are many others). Clearly, the bell curve means, among other things, that most people are not very smart, and that the very smartest people are in a slim minority. We are fortunate, frankly, that there is a large enough audience for things like the films mentioned.

Similarly, the top tv dramas are smart, most especially, at this point, "Law and Order" and "NYPD Blue". For a mass medium, it is remarkable that such shows can get a comfortably large audience. "Seinfeld" was very clever and sophisticated; newsmagazines like "60 Minutes" and "20/20" command large audiences; and talk radio, which mainly discusses substantive issues, has a large following.

Dumbing down???
