But the more science sees the similarities, the further it seems to be from understanding what makes us human and not animal.

he remarked very timidly...

One theory goes , superior reasoning came from
standing up-right , freeing the hands up for more
tasks & making/shaping tools and manipulating
materials.

Another aspect comes from the organized hunt
which both for food and territorial imperative
made us become vastly more clever and aware...
our chimpanzee relatives are consumate hunters
of other primates ...I am sure we were
no different , and that you must be somewhat
aware of the above ?

You can also refer tp the more recent recorded history
for the last 5k yrs too , if you like as well.

Also from larger brain the evolving skills
and techniques for survival comes a greater
sense security , and lent itself to longer periods
of REM sleep and dreaming . This kind of deep-sleep
patterns are also observed in primates .

You really see science being further away from understanding
our descending (or ascending ) from animals ?

Truely Chris ?
