Science has no clue what that is. .. What makes a set of cells human , Chris and not a chimpanzee or a pig or a fish is the DNA . Science has very much a "clue". Science is completly aware of this . The human foetus is also observed going thru most all of the stages of early evolutionary developement from one cell thru fish , tail , pig , primate to human in the later stages . I'm talking about the gulf which we crossed at some point when we turned from animals into humans. Call it self-awareness, call it soul, call it empathy, call it what you will. Of course there is a gulf that was crossed , that led as you say towards heightened self awareness , self-conciousness and the developement of empathy compassion ... To say that science has no clue is really a meaningless statement posed on your part . There are myriads of anthropological studies that trace the trail of our developement and rise out of nature . To not see that man lived by killing and virtually swam in a sea of blood everyday for his survival for 10's of thousands of years ....is something you cannot imagine ? And the need for the resolution of this condition ? It is a heavy burden , as I perceive it , to live by killing incessantly for so long . That is where your "empathy" and "human compassion" may have arisen from ...you cannot see this too ?
