August 19 - I've seen faster P4s and Athlons at both Best Buy and Circuit City, but they aren't in the ads.

Since 3 weeks ago, desktop prices have been flat or risen slightly, while many Notebooks dropped by $100 to
$200. I'm no longer sure these lists mean much, Certainly AMD was all but gone from advertising during much
of Q2, yet they sold record units. So, for whatever it's worth, here's what's being advertised....
b=Best Buy c=Circuit City Sears=s o=Office Depot
Note that some details (flat screen monitor, amount of memory, better printer, etc) means the relative value
of these systems is not completely reflected below.
bto means I added $100 to bto prices to reflect a shipping/inconvenience estimate.
MSN means I subtracted $100 to reflect value of 1 year of Internet

Dan3 says "Given the scenario you describe, [If Via has the legal right to sell their P4 chipset, and Intel is bullying OEMs not to use it, Via should be able to sue for damages]"

That is your description NOT mine.

Dan3 continues "... it's pretty much a slam dunk for RICO (Racketeering Influenced Corrupt Organization) triple damages. The plaintiff will need 3 incidents"

Total, utter nonsense. Go read the RICO statute and see what acts allow a RICO claim. Crimes are required -- "incidents" are not enough.

It is not a crime to say "We believe that the Via chipset violates Intel's patents". This is a perfectly legitimate statement.

Note that Via has acknowledged the Intel patents by signing a patent license for other P6 chipsets and paying royalties. But now Via says that it does not need a license for its new DDR chipset. Why? Because Via would rather steal Intel's technology rather than pay for its use.
