So it's no stretch of the imagination to believe that VIA's strategy is to leverage the S3 cross-licensing agreement with Intel.

This isn't the first time VIA has used Intel IP without license. A couple of years ago they were licensed to do a 100MHz FSB chipset but also introed a 133MHz FSB version and were promptly sued, settling on undisclosed terms out of court. Did VIA acquire these S3 licenses after the prior litigation and if not, why didn't they protect VIA before?
