I think many many kids have alcoholic parents, abusive parents, hell, abusive step-sibs, and don't get tagged as ADHD in school.

Of course different children react very differently to similar situations. What might crush one might motivate another to rise above.

What makes me uncomfortable here, especially in the context of advertising these medications directly to parents, is that the easiest course in many situations is for parents to assume that a problem is medical and reach for drugs before looking for other ways to alter a situation. The assumption of a medical problem absolves parents of direct responsibility, and saves them the trouble of feeling like they need to alter their parenting style or manage their children differently.

Most people will convince themselves that the easiest way is the best, even if there are other ways to achieve the same goal that might be more effective. I'm not sure we should be making that process any easier than it already is.
