Lazerus,

I think this goes beyond the stories and anecdotal evidence you abhor.

Abhor? That's a bit off the deep end, isn't it? Anecdotal stories have there place. I note that the Framers in there letters used anecdotal stories to illustrate points; they weren't offered as proofs.

On the referenced link. IMO, everytime you see an article in which only favorable statistics are offered you should treat it suspiciously..which is what that particular passage does. There is enough data [and statistics] available in the world that if I select them properly I can claim any point that I want to make.

I've offered comparisons of the US and Europe across a wide range, crime, poverty rate, etc., sometimes the US does very well, sometimes it doesn't. I do make an effort to be objective and reasonably comprehensive. This article isolates only certain crimes and cites only countries that do worse. [A brief mention as if by passing on France and Switzerland.]

Sweden and the Netherlands, despite their reputations as nearly crime-free...

That's news to me! I've never heard that any of the European countries were crime free.

I'll see if I can find an entire study or report that we can look at and make our own conclusions on. I had something from the Census bureau. I hope I can find it a second time.

As an aside...from the looks of the Wall Street article. Crime rate in the US was rapidly falling during the Clinton Administration while the crime rate was rising during the tenure of Maggie Thatcher [79-90], which happens to be consistent with the crime rates rising during the Reagan Administration.
