either technician time or challenge time! the network cable is the cable that formerly had plugged into your cable modem.

you can try to understand your configuration this way:

phone line -> dsl-modem -> ethernet cable -> USB-NIC (usb-network-interface-card) -> your computer -> (windows) -> usb-driver -> USB-NIC-driver -> tcp/ip-driver -> dsl-modem-driver

Just kind of a mental model, though...

The trick with computers is that you need a model in your mind to understand what's going on. Then you can check step by step if you have all you need.
