Maurice -

...Excellent point Step1. I didn't want to make it complex but the factories and inputs required to produce extra water, electricity, detergent, food, fuel and the array of other requirements to operate the extravagant, inefficient, 'wash by hand' system are enormous. ...

When evaluating the 'wash by hand' at the individual level, the electricity is only saved in terms of not paying for it on a monthly bill. If the electricity was not furnished by D cell batteries, and the usage did not cause an additional generator to be brought on line, there would be little savings since the capacity was on line and utility electricity cannot, in general, currently be saved if it is not used.

Also all cost accounting of current variable usage should not include the infrastructure or other sunk (or committed)costs. If you use electricity from a nuclear plant, the cost of the plant and the cost of decommissioning can't be included ( or more accurately can't be excluded by a decision to not use the electricity).
