Something I've come to realize a while back... all of us are fleas on an elephant. We bitch and moan, and occasionally bite hard enough for the elephant to notice us... but on the whole, the elephant is going to do whatever it darn well wants. If we are smart enough to pick an elephant that is going in the direction we want, although it could care less whether we are along for the ride or not, then great for us.

In many ways management-by-press-release was part of the late 90s bubble mindset which was driven by investor impatience. Like it or not, the investor clock ticks in quarters because that's how often investors get a meaningful read on how the business is really doing. In a post-bubble, post-RegFD environment investors are going to have to reset their internal clocks to resynchronize with this fundamental heartbeat of the markets. I'm not sure that's such a bad development even if the adjustment is at times painful.
