I found that the boys in my second grade class loved to draw extremely gore filled pictures. But they weren't drwaing themselves IN them, so I assume they were psychologically healthy.

I read a book to the class called The 13th Floor, a Ghost Story. It's about children who travel back in time and meet their great great great great great great grandfather who is a pirate. We often drew our favorite scene from the book after we read a chapter. The girls often drew lovely ships in water (often adding mermaids that were NOT in the text), the boys drew fights between pirates, lots of blood, and one enterprising young artist drew all the pirates as walking skeletons. It was interesting.
