DSL copper transmission is capable of higher speed by shot gun technology. There is no limit of how many channels of slow speed transmission to be reassembled in sequence at the end point to achieve high speed transmission. Same thing can be done on cable copper coaxial line. Other than that, media people loves to have more customers to distribute their properties for a fee. Long distance revenue for local telco is questionable, since internet email anywhere is free and maintains a record. So, new revenue can be in competition with cable plants since duplication is only 30-40%. The rest of the 99% homes may like to have a cheaper service thru their telephone line.
