Well, it takes all intellectual kinds. Here is a PM I just got permission from X to post. I had to argue a little bit, lol. She is so outta here. But I wanted to indicate how far from the words bree attributed to X the actual words of X themselves are, where a 'distaste' for justice , aka sometimes unfairness, and human values, and truth, is concerned. This was a private communication. I thank X for the permission to post it.From: X the Unknown ...several of the people on the boxing thread know I have changed my position on the death penalty. It's interesting they don't bring that up. I believe I argued against the death penalty with Brees, Ebill and JLA. After I read Jonathan Kozol's book last year I became a bit more radical in my support for people who are dealt cards from the bottom of the deck. I knew, of course, (who doesn't?) that life was unfair. But I never realized quite how unfair it was- I probably still don't. But I have a much better idea than I did. And I go to school with people who teach in juvenile hall, and in really bad areas of Oakland and Richmond. There is so much pain out there, a world of pain, I can't imagine adding to that, even to assuage the human craving for justice, revenge, retribution- blood sisters. And as I said in some post Neo or Chris posted- what IS just, what is justice? We could wish there was some sort of divine justice, but I see no evidence of it. I could certainly wish that everyone got what they deserve- although I cannot comprehend trying to figure out what people deserve. That doesn't mean we can't believe in it- if we have the power to believe. I don't happen to possess that power. So I have to be guided by compassion. And I see no way to square justice, in the forms that humans conceive it, with compassion. Justice, imo, must yield to compassion for us to be sure we are not doing evil. This whole idea is a work in progress, of course. It will stop (I suspect) when I am dead. But until then I reserve the right to change it. Not that anyone you are arguing with on the Boxing thread would understand. Reply | Delete | File
