I don't think it should be their pick but to get it off the ground transitionally I would support the pick idea. The thing is we have to come to terms with the idea of what a heinous crime is. Society, should have clear limits of what we can accept and what we can't and what to do about it beyond a certain limit. I think banishment says it.

I don't understand the, "these are people too" thinking. Of course they are people. As in your example: do you think you can rehabilitate this criminal and would you want this "person" to be your 2nd grader's teacher? Maybe you could "save" one out of thousands of heinous criminals and bring them back to live a "normal" life. Why? It's fair to the rest of us to provide a reasonably safe society where don't have to wonder which ones you screwed up with in the parole system.
