Max, I read in the Lowes report that they attributed part of the strength to people staying home on vacation and fixing up their house instead of going away someplace.

The low interest rates also probably helped pump some money into home improvement via home equity loans.

The reason why I'm a bit skeptical right now about tax loss selling is that with the April low and recent weakness, many of the losers may have already been sold by funds wanting to get them off their books for quarterly reports (prior window dressing). If we are well above the April lows and above the 2000 level in early October, we may avoid a drop to the October 1998 lows.
