No End in Sight for Profit Ice Age
Aug 20, 2001, (The Washington Post /FT Information via COMTEX) -- Washington technology stocks have fallen 11.7% in the last 11 days, according to the Northern Virginia Technology Council Tech 60 Index, while the Nasdaq 100 stock index is down 13.4%, suggesting that the high-tech gloom is not showing any signs of lifting. Stephen C. Thormahlen of Fiduciary Investment Management International Inc. does not expect the earnings outlook to improve until the final quarter of this year at the earliest, which means no stock rebound can be expected till then. Some analysts believe the decline in the US dollar is also damaging the stock market, by making American stocks less attractive to foreign investors. This will be watched closely by the Federal Reserve, whose Open Market Committee meets Tuesday to consider whether or not to cut interest rates again.
