I sent the following e-mail on Monday and received this reply today. Draw your own conclusions. My e-mail: An article in today's Dagens Industri (http://www.di.se) reported that Ericsson has abandoned WCDMA and is concentrating on CDMA for 3G. To quote from the article: "Ericsson has now given up the focus on WCDMA and will focus on the United States standard which is expected to become dominant world-wide..." Having heard nothing directly from Ericsson in this regard, could you please address this news report and comment on whether Ericsson has, in fact, "given up" on WCDMA, whether Ericsson is now focusing on CDMA1X (etc.) and whether Ericsson believes that the US standard will become dominant world-wide. Thank you very much. WPR Reply: Hi Walter! This piece of news was not in DI today, so it would be interesting to know where you saw it. Financial Times also denies any involvement. Mr Hellström did in fact not give any interview on this subject. So the source is actually a mystery to us. Anyway, this is our position in 3G: Title "Ericsson switches its focus to CDMA" (August 21) This article contains some profound misunderstandings about Ericssons corporate policy, due probably to radical mistakes in the translation from the original article in Swedish paper Dagens Industri. Facts are that Ericsson has not in any way changed its policy concerning third generation cellular systems. Our strategy is to supply a complete portfolio of all essential cellular systems standards. WCDMA is the dominating global standard for 3G and Ericsson has to date the largest market share for WCDMA, named as supplier by 34 operators around the world. Ericsson also promotes CDMAOne for 2G and CDMA 2000, another fast growing solution for 3G in which Ericsson has invested greatly in research and development, holding a large number of essential patents. So CDMA is definitely not just an "american" technology, its one of three internationally agreed 3G standards. (Besides WCDMA and EDGE) We believe WCDMA will have 70 - 80 percent share of the global 3G market.
