Nitre plus KOH is the oxidant I would use. You get K2MnO4. Add lots of Borax glass to achieve a higher temp melt. I would try it at 3 times the weight nitre and once KOH to manganese. I would not go much above 2200.

Trouble is the nickel may oxidize here too. Dunno. On the other hand if yoiu don't add silicates or add plenty of NaOH the slag may be soluble in water and the nickel part may not be. Try it. Nickel has a habit it reporting to the metal portion of the slag when high oxides are present. It is called matte. This may not be high in Mn. If you want to slag all metals you can do it. Selectively slagging metals is hard. You could try adding carbon to the hot metal and seeing if you get nickel carbonyl gas. You might see some solution in The Winning of Nickel at your library.

If you find Bill out wandering anywhere you could ask him, as he did study chemistry at one time. Pyrolitics may not be his specialty (does being a pyromaniac count?) but he could point you in the right direction.

You could also try acidulating with weak acid, adding NaOH and filtering. I don't know about the nickel in that case. nickel forms an insoluble hydroxide so that might not separate it. The nickel hydroxide is not amphoteric. When in doubt go back to the 100 step solubility-separation experiment of making precipitates of metals. I am sure the answer is in there somewhere.
