Gephardt Criticizes Condit, Hints at Action Reuters ST. LOUIS, Missouri (Aug. 24) - House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt said on Friday Rep. Gary Condit was evasive and disturbing in his television interview and he plans to talk with his fellow Democrats about possible action against the California congressman. ''I do not believe he was candid and forward,'' Gephardt said in an interview with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which was posted on the newspaper's web site shortly afterward. ''He stayed in this zone of being evasive ... I didn't hear candor, I didn't hear an apology.'' His future rests with Condit himself and his political constituents, Gephardt said, but added ''I need to talk to my colleagues... We're going to have to deal with the issues.'' The newspaper said Gephardt indicated that possible action against Condit could include asking him to give up his seat on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee. The Missouri Democrat said Condit's interview with ABC's Connie Chung on Thursday was a chance for him to clear up any questions about the disappearance of 24-year-old Chandra Levy, a former government intern, and his involvement with her. ''What he said last night was disturbing and wrong,'' Gephardt said. ''I think it fell way short.
