I was mistaken and my other modems are reporting speed the ports locked at. A 31.2k connect is what I'm getting out of the other modems too. Adding batteries to the speakers fixed the sound card problem since the output from this card isn't amplified. :) I still have 4 devices on IRQ 11 but tech says that's normal for Win2k. Everything works so maybe it is but start, programs, accessories, sys info, hardware resources, conflicts/sharing lists them... so I dunno but it's time to move on. Thanks to everyone for the thought provoking suggestions and discussion. Best regards, MM
