Elmer, RE: The citizens weren't getting much from that cow pasture anyway and the great State of Texas failed to pass some promised legislation in a timely manor.

We could probably argue about this one until those cows actually came home, Elmer, but I'll leave it with this: Alliance Airport is hardly a cow pasture.

Elmer, Re tax breaks for corporations

Since you clarified that your comments are restricted to Intel, I agree with you. Having an Intel plant with all the high paying jobs does a lot of good to the community as you described. I have found Intel as well as other companies like Motorola, HP, IBM to be very good corporate citizens in this respect. Even though these companies have not been bashful when it comes to taking advantage of generous subsidies offered by foreign governments (but can one blame them for that?).

But I have seen a case where some county in Tenessee (or was it Kentucky?) gave a global auto manufacturer a subsidy which amounted to $35,000 per person not per job to locate in that county. This subsidy enabled through bonds was in addition to other tax breaks. In this case, I don't see how the county could ever hope to recover that kind of money. Especially, when their tax base is so poor in the first place.
