Re: The Spitfire (older Duron) can get to 950MHz while at 1.6v, whereas the Morgan (newer Duron) needs to be increased to 1.75v to achieve 900MHz

The roadmaps show Duron to 1.2GHZ. Generally, AMD likes to use one voltage for a given line where it can. 1.75v may be necessary only to get morgan to 1.2 or 1.3GHZ.

It's rather interesting that the copper chips using the new core use less power at a given MHZ, while the Aluminum chips appear to use about the same, but that's likely an artifact resulting from the morgan being speced with a voltage high enough to carry it to 1.2-1.3GHZ, while spitfire was not. Since power goes up at voltage squared, using the "same" power at a given frequency actually indicates a power savings of about 20% - and isn't that what was seen with Thunderbird/Palomino? (which didn't see a voltage increase as large as .15, as I recall)

50 watts at 1.2GHZ shouldn't be a configuration problem for Morgan - given what the boxmakers are now used to accommodating for Athlon.

JC, I think this quote from Tom's Hardware sums up pretty well AMD's current situation:

tomshardware.com

"[complaing about launching Morgan one day early] You might find this whole issue rather meaningless, but it actually shows the state of AMD right now. I'd say it's best described with the words 'pure chaos', meaning 'more chaos than what we are already used to' from the past.

My wag: At first AMD wanted to launch the 1.1 GHz mobile Athlon 4 on Monday and the 1 GHz Morgan on Tuesday. Then they realized that they had no launch partners and no volume for Morgan, so they combined both press releases. Bragging about business market share in an almost totally unrelated product announcement press release looks pretty weird to me, too.

JC, Re: "Fact: The Spitfire (older Duron) can get to 950MHz while at 1.6v, whereas the Morgan (newer Duron) needs to be increased to 1.75v to achieve 900MHz"

The fact is that the new Morgan chips are set at 1.75V for all speed grades, but the idea that all the new speed grades need to be at 1.75V is not factual. It could be that AMD is relaxing the specification in anticipation of higher speed grades in the near future. Then again, maybe they just need 1.75V. :)

That's not a fact either! See previous post(eom)
