You are aware that the highest unemployment rate during that fiasco was 25%, aren't you? That means 75% were working. And, as I said, as far as retirement funds, there is diversifiaction and government backed securities. Do you think your SS funds are safer the Treasury Bonds? If push came to shove the gov't would much rather throw you over the side than people who will lend it money. It's much safer. If it can borrow money, it can buy guns and pay troops to shoot you if you object too much.
