Let's see- it was over two years ago- but if I remember they were surprised that he wrote such a convincing book. Then they began to worry that it might not be a really authentic voice, because a man writing as a woman is going to write differently than a woman writing as a woman. And of course, same goes for women who write make characters. It was my position that it is entertainment, and so authenticity doesn't matter very much if you enjoy it. But I feel the same way about life. Not condoning lying, of course, but it is very hard to know true motives, to know one's authentic motivations, desires, etc. Some people are better at seeing through the layers of window dressing we put on our emotions and motivations but no one is completely bare naked authentic. I suppose some animals are, the ones where "thinking" doesn't get in the way. But I am sure I've seen dogs second guess themselves. I can SEE them trying to decide whether to put their master's wishes and commands ahead of their own- so they don't even have authentic "feeligns"- it must be a disease they caught from humans.

Gosh, this turned into a weird post. And I'm not even sorry.
