John: I did my walking around research last week in Decorah, Iowa while visiting the family farm my stepson runs. First, Wal-Mart and the main street businesses were doing fine...plenty of shoppers and carts were full. Restaurants were doing o.k. (per discussions with wait staff, managers). Organic farm markets AND latte stands doing well...holding up far better than I thought either would do in a true recession (my real fear was that the little pleasures like lattes or organic tomatoes would be the first things to be discarded when times got hard),

Who knows how this will play out, but I was pleasently surprised by the strength and confidence at the consumer level in my little piece of the heartland.

I agree with you...
Expectations are too high on both ends needless to say.
Time will tell who is right..
