W YORK, Aug 22, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Standard & Poor's will make the following changes in the S&P 500 and S&P 100
Indices:

-- CIENA Corp. (NASD: CIEN chart, msgs) will replace American General
(NYSE: AGC chart, msgs) in the S&P 500 Index after the close of trading on
a date to be announced. S&P 500 component American Int'l.
Group (NYSE: AIG chart, msgs) is acquiring American General. The
transaction is still subject to regulatory approvals. SBC
Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC chart, msgs) will replace American General
in the S&P 100 Index.

CIENA Corp. manufactures telecommunications equipment used to increase the capacity of fiber optic networks. The company,
headquartered in Linthicum, Maryland, will be added to the S&P 500 GICS Telecommunications Equipment sub-industry group and
the Communications Equipment industry group.
