Intel, Compaq have wireless Web device deal

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug 22 (Reuters) - Intel Corp. <INTC.O>, the leading computer chip maker, and No. 2 personal computer company Compaq Computer Corp.<CPQ.N> said on Wednesday they would work together to speed development of wireless handheld communications devices and software to access and transmit data over the Internet.

Under the deal, the companies will work together to enable multimedia applications using Intel standards for current and next-generation wireless networks. Compaq will support Intel in its efforts to incorporate Compaq iPAQ Pocket PCs based on Intel's low-power consuming Strongarm microprocessors.

Compaq also announced its support for the Intel's Personal Internet Client Architecture initiative, a development blueprint for building wireless handheld communications devices that combine voice communications and Internet access capabilities.
