The trouble with the "market as forecasting mechanism" argument is that when you have the market fluctuating all over the place, which price trends do you take as the forecast, the uptrends or the downtrends?

The market was forecasting great things to come in March of 2000. It was forecasting a bleak future in March of 2001. It was forecasting great things again in May of 2001, and now seems to be forecasting a bleak future again. Which forecast is the "real" one?
