Latest DC/DC Converter From Artesyn Offers Customers Unique Design Flexibility and Extremely Low Profile
biz.yahoo.com
BOCA RATON, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 2001--Artesyn Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq:ATSN) today announced the launch of the EXB50 half-brick DC/DC converter. This product is one of the first half-brick, dual-output converters on the market to offer designers an ultra-wide 1.5V to 5.2V output range. It is particularly well suited for the increasing number of low-voltage applications in distributed power architectures.

The EXB50 converter has a high efficiency power rating of 50W and features two independent voltage outputs. Initially set at 3.3V and 5V, the EXB50 has a patented circuit technology that allows customers to adjust the output voltages to fit their specific design needs. Each output can be individually adjusted to meet any voltage requirement from 5.2V down to 1.5V. In addition, the dual outputs mean that, in many cases, a customer can use a single unit for multiple power needs.

``The EXB50 is one of the most innovative products launched into the market so far this year,'' commented Artesyn's President and CEO, Joseph M. O'Donnell. ``The ultra-wide trim feature allows us to power non-standard voltage requirements that previously would have required a custom designed converter. This unique approach not only shortens the time to market, but also allows us to leverage the product across a wide range of potential design opportunities. The customer response has been very strong, and we have already recorded design wins with both Alcatel and Nortel that will begin shipping in the first-quarter, 2002.

Based on a single-board design, the EXB50 is the thinnest half-brick converter available on the market today. Constructed entirely from SMT components, and utilizing advanced planar magnetics, the EXB50 has a product height of just 0.39 inches. Like other products announced from Artesyn this year, the EXB50 uses advanced synchronous rectification techniques to achieve high conversion efficiencies, with an 89% typical efficiency rating. The converter is primarily intended for the networking, telecommunication and wireless markets, where small size, low voltage, low profile and high efficiency are all key demands. Typical applications include high-end routers and switches, optical networking products, transmission systems and wireless base stations.

The EXB50 is currently available in volume for customer sampling.
