I know a box builder who has still been putting in 700 mhz PIII's for small business workstations. He knows them, they've been stable, and they've become real cheap. He told me when AMD has a MP CPU he would be ready to listen, not necessarily to use MP CPU's, but that AMD would have arrived. Guess what, he's listening now. In mindshare, AMD is making significant inroads on Intel. Could that be Intel's reasoning for this 'to the death' price war? As AMD makes real inroads into the notebook market (Best Buy is best example), Intel's inflated ASP's will need to drop to remain competitive. Same thing will happen in servers, but it may take longer to work up to larger OEM's. I just can't understand how OEM's have allowed Intel to name their price (in other words gouging), due to the lack of other choice. Ironically, the presence of choice may only be used to AMD's exclusion due to sweetheart deals, at least it is for Dell.

I think the car companies were in the same boat in the 70's and 80's. All of a sudden, when the other car companies learned that you could sell a 'Toyota' (Lexus) for $40,000, the sweet spot for cars went up to the low $20K's rather than low to mid $10K's. Was that collusion or just all parties deciding on a plan of action that allowed for profits to be made?

fyo, Loads of SD shops here in Toronto sell AMD as well as Intel. They have the ability to be more competitive with AMD. Celeron seems to be nearly gone.
