Albert the bolded part is retail shipments. It does not include online sales just stores. Even with "Gateway Country" stores, most of GTW's sales are online. I still think your right about those figures not being true but true or not they don't say much about Gateway.

Albert, I think where you are confused is that IBM and GTW are not considered part of the U.S. retail chain. U.S. retail is strictly what is sold in large retail chain stores such as Best Buy, CompUSA, and Circuit City. In these stores, the "Big-4" are Compaq, HP, Emachines, and Apple, although you will find machines from Sony, Tangent, Everex, and a few others as well (these go under "other"). I think what you are finding in your hilighted section is that Compaq, HP, and Emachines have more or less hoarded the majority of the retail sales. This says nothing of the health of other "Top-10" OEMs, which do their business online, and reach the end user through Direct Sales.

What I find alarming in this report is not your hilighted line, but rather this.

WEEKLY DESKTOP SHIPMENTS YR/YR GROWTH BY PRICE POINT - U.S RETAIL
Week Beg. 6/10 6/17 6/24 7/1 7/8 7/15 7/22 7/29
Market Growth -15% -18% -31% -24% -46% -38% -35% -21%

Year on year growth for desktop shipments in retail have fallen around 30%. No wonder both HP and CPQ are making headlines due to their woes. At least one silver lining, though, is that portable sales seem to be stagnant to slightly positive.

WEEKLY PORTABLE SHIPMENTS YR/YR GROWTH BY PRICE POINT - U.S. RETAIL

Market Growth 13% -5% 16% 8% -10% 13% 3% 17%

Additionally, week on week sales of both desktop and portables indicate that the market has stabilized (bottomed out, as Intel has called it), and we may be looking at seasonal increases, week on week (also, as Intel has indicated). Check out the data for yourself. Year on year, it's pretty dismal, but we already knew that fact. The good news is that it may be improving.
