Sprint, Dell form Web-hosting pact
By Reuters
August 30, 2001, 5:20 a.m. PT
KANSAS CITY, Mo.--U.S. long-distance telephone company Sprint said Thursday it has formed a pact with personal computer giant Dell to focus on Web hosting and electronic-commerce product offerings for small and medium-sized businesses.

Sprint did not provide specific financial terms of the deal, but said the pact would generate "hundreds of millions of dollars" in sales over the next seven years.

Under the agreement, Sprint and Dell will work together to develop bundled hosting solutions for small and medium-sized business customers.

Sprint will useDell's PowerEdge servers and PowerVault storage systems in its hosting business, and Dell will purchase selected telecommunications services from Sprint.

Sprint said the companies believe the alliance builds on the strengths of each other's core businesses.

The deal matches Sprint's capabilities in communications transport with Dell's knowledge in equipment, Sprint said. Dell's enterprise products include network servers, workstations and storage systems.

Shares of Sprint fell 34 cents to $22.95 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares of Dell were unchanged at $21.80 on the Nasdaq.
