I'm not taking a position on who's right or wrong on this. But it does underscore the fact that "free trade" has not yet really been defined or achieved. President Bush is not demonstrating the world-class statesmanship needed to resolve these issues. He's basically retreating into old-fashioned, head-in-the-sand, what-me-worry? isolationism. I'm not saying he should just cave in on all these issues, but it will be impossible for him to cut deals and get things done if he is not willing to give anything in return. Here's another example of potential friction looming on the horizon...
