Dan, Re: "Go look up the process node used by Sparc and the process used by IBM/Intel/Motorola/AMD during the same year. Engel used to ridicule SUN and its TI Sparcs almost as much as he jeered AMD."

Is this the fault of TI's process, or Sun's design? TI makes other parts on more advanced manufacturing processes, just not CPUs, as far as I know. And how about all the other manufacturers who aren't using SOI, but keep up with advanced processes? Are they all jokes, too? In other words, who do you consider to be the industry's top manufacturers, and does that number give you enough data points to make a blanket statement like, "I still can't believe that Intel spent all that money to wind up lacking the process technology that every other major player in the industry claims is absolutely necessary to be a performance leader?"
