There is a thread of plot that continues through the series. The narrators are all lineal descendents of each other. They all happen to be around at seminal moments of US history.

I guess I would recommend reading them in chronological order.

The funniest scene I remember, Teddy Roosevelt had a habit of taking straight walks (this is true BTW). He would pick two points on the map and walk a straight line between them no mater what lay between.

In this scene (probably fiction) the British ambassador and TR are taking one of his walks. As they discuss weighty matters between the two countries, they walk into the tidal basin, up to their necks, and back out again without batting an eye or pausing the conversation.
