Nforce production - next week

Boards in late September
By Fuad Abazovic, 23/08/2001 07:17:13 BST

TODAY WE FINALLY received some official comment from Nvidia. In the future, the INQUIRER will be able to get more info from Nvidia since serious changes have happened in our relations.
Well we don't like to go with rumours and my previous article was based on information we received from one of the major board manufacturers and I believe that I may not have not drawn the right conclusion from it.

Nvidia was ready to share some information with us. The firm said that production of Nforce chipsets is scheduled to start in the next week.

It also stated that its schedules are "still very much on track", giving us the idea that there were some adjustments in plans since as far as I remember, boards should have appeared sometime this month.

We must add that every beginning is a hard one and Nvidia is selling its first chipset. Experience is what they gathered in making the X-box and Nforce chipsets and once they launch this first baby, the rest is just hard work and routine mixed with some innovations.

The first boards should appear in late September but we still do not have a clue how many will be available at that time.

OEM's should follow the schedule and present their own systems based on Nforce boards sometime in October.

We believe that these boards have great potential in OEM machines since you will get a fully equipped board with good video and audio with just RAM and CPU to plug it in to have a complete system. If you imagine it with Duron and up to 256MB of memory, these machines could hit really desirable price points.

We'd like to clarify our previous article and say that some boards will be two months away, which does not necessarily mean all of them will be late. Pricing will definitely be an issue. µ

AJ, Re: [1.5 GHz Palomino in mid September] Can anyone confirm that this is a realistic expectation?

AMD has stated that they want to release Palomino for desktop this quarter and that they want to reach 1.5 GHz in the same timeframe, so unless something has changed that's exactly what we can expect. However, I wouldn't be too surprised if we saw a 1.5 GHz Thunderbird instead.
