All I know of Senator Helms is that I find him with positions that I respect but don't fully agree with and some I might disagree with. What I've seen of the man indicates to me that Senator Helms has nothing in his past to live down. I also don't consider Truman has anything to live down. From what I know of the man in all really important matters he acted with nobility and honor. A young person is programmed by the place he lives in and a great person will find his way out of bad programming. That to me is a simple measure.
