Computer networking equipment imports double in first seven months, reach US$900M (23 August 2001) From January to July, China's imports of computer networking equipment totaled US$900 million, double the value of imports in the same period last year. The increase was 150 percentage points higher than the average increase of all imported commodities in China. The imported products mainly consisted of network switches, network cards, hubs and routers, the Aug. 20 Xinhuashe (Xinhua News Agency) reported. The composition of the imported network products changed substantially during the first seven months of this year, and the unit prices went up considerably. For example, the unit price of routers rose from last year's US$3,177 to US$5,079. During the first seven months of the year, the import value of network switches was US$243 million and that of routers was US$282 million. The value of the imports of these two items was 2.3 times that of the same period last year. The trade of finished goods accounted for US$800 million or 89 percent of total imports. The United States has become a major supplier of China's network products, the article noted. State-owned enterprises imported US$750 million of networking products during the first seven months, which was 1.9 times the value of such imports in the same period last year and accounted for 84 percent of the total import of network products.
