Either you will have mindless obedience, or intellectual sterility.

Greg, really, you don't have to try to match the tenor of the thread. And Mrs. Peel has already finalized the word list so there's nothing to be gained by tossing sterility and mindless into the ring. <g>

I'm surprised you can't see that the former leads to the latter, you have it turned around.

I do understand that, Greg. The optimum way would be to establish the belief system first and then channel the behavior accordingly.

The reason I turned it around was that I fear we're bogged down in the belief matter. There's no consensus and people have a lot of vested interest in their belief systems. I can't see society turning that around any time soon. Neo is more sanguine, but I think it will happen slowly, if ever, at the rate we're going.

So I consider a shortcut, which I think could work. Skip the horse and go right to the cart. It's like putting school kids in uniforms, It's superficial, but it might get the kids to sit still long enough that you can work on the underlying stuff. And even if they don't make an organic change, at least you have peace and quiet in the classroom.

Another example is treating depression. You can go through years of analysis and try to solve the underlying problem through the fog of your brain. Or you can take a pill, get rid of the fog, get out, exercise, and get yourself into a condition that's much more receptive to solving the underlying problem. And even if you never fix the underlying problem, you're functional in society and happier.

If you get people doing the works, maybe the faith will seep in. If not, at least you have the works.
