Are they still human?

I think that case is not well understood, and rare enough that the person should be protected. This actually comes up a lot when people become "brain dead". They are still alive but unaware and not likely to become aware. It is generally considered that they are dead. Sometimes these "dead" people are kept on machines because the family cannot tolerate the concept of death enough to let them go. It is rare enough to let them stay on the machines. If it became a great financial burdon the matter could require looking into who pays the bill.
