Lehman cuts AMD ests. amid pricing war (INTC, AMD) By Tomi Kilgore

Analyst Dan Niles at Lehman Bros. said there would be another price cut coming from Intel (INTC) on Oct. 28, which he said would be "small" for desktop computers but "vicious" for portables, as the chip giant tries to stop Advanced Micro Devices's (AMD) market share gains in the U.S. retail market. Given this pricing environment, Niles lowered his 2001 earnings estimate for AMD to 25 cents a share from 35 cents, and his 2002 EPS estimate to 40 cents from 80 cents. He added that back-to-school demand appears subdued so far, which is in "sharp contrast" to Intel's forecast of a demand surge. He left his estimates for Intel intact, which will be providing a quarterly update on Sept. 6. AMD shares slipped 21 cents to $14.30, while Intel fell 29 cents to $27.67. Intel's had traded up 13 cents at $27.80 in Instinet pre-open trading.

Well Tim, you were right on JDSU. JDSU is up a lot more than CIEN percentage wise....actually point wise as well. Of course, the one that is doing best but I failed to mention is SCMR. Although its in metro, it had such a bad earnings report, I passed it up and decided just to hold the shares that I have.

So, of course, currently SCMR is up $.74 right now, JDSU is up $.52 and CIEN only $.42. If this rally has any legs, I might buy some SCMR and maybe OCPI which is not moving much today but also is in the metro space.

Re <<On taking a quick look at LMNE its P/S ratio is about the same as JDSU's so I guess its not cheap either>>

Very true, neither LMNE or JDSU are cheap by historic standards. But I prefer LMNE over JDSU because they are more focused on the metro area which needs immediate attention. Again, I don't own either, just watching.

I think it is not wise to lump all "optics" together in a single segment. Optical industry is getting just as diverse as semi's. But less people have any understanding about optics, so there is more opportunity for a knowledgeable investor to make money.
