John, Re: "Niles is still saying Intel can't forecast it's business, that the PC makers are right about demand."

For once, I think Niles has a good point. Intel's "Breakaway" strategy could be a Make or Break period for them, in terms of revenue for the next few quarters. I think this transition is brutal, and couldn't have happened at a worse time. It seems to me that we may be in for some nasty stock activity for the next few quarters, until new product lines like Xeon, Itanium, etc, have a chance to stabilize, and roadmaps have a chance to take effect. Long term, I see brighter skies, but there is too much uncertainty right now to invest in anything but long term.

Re: Sun must feel like General Custer at Little Big Horn

Why, because 2 of its major competitors have basically thrown in the towel?

I think you've got it backwards. SUN used to have to compete with Alpha, PA-Risc, PowerPC, and Intel.

Now they face only PowerPC and X86.

All those Alpha and PA-Risc users have a decision to make: should they go with Sparc, PowerPC, or Intel. SUN, IBM, and Intel will all be winners. HP and Compaq will be losers since they are sure to lose some customers in the transition.

Re Good news on Itanium. Sun must feel like General Custer at Little Big Horn. More enemies each day, with brand new weapons. Wonder if Sun will ever relent and support IA64?

I know I am kinda late with this ... but I have just viewed the Intel webcast of April 2001, where Paul O. showed the "2 tons Itanium systems " slide and commented that "it's really a pity that Mr McNealy - who said he never saw an itanium processor - is not around today ".

No, they'll be driven into the arms of AMD and x86-64.
