Yes, that is exactly the issue. It is true however that Dole could have more "ideological adherence" to conservative ideas and still be quite electable , but that isn't an option, the Republicans are wither going to support her or find another candidate she's not going to change.

I don't know. Is Dole electable? Presumably the people of NC. chose Helms 5 times because of his conservative principles not his sparkling personality (but maybe I’m wrong – never been to NC)

But if it was his conservative principles they liked, what’s going to motivate them to vote for Jim Jeffords in a skirt?
