It appeared to be more an argument based on moral relativism or absolutism.

I'm not sure I buy that. Observation of the conduct of the contending parties reveals that those carrying the banner of absolutism were in fact only too willing to adopt a quite extreme degree of relativism when they found it expedient to do so, and that those we class as "relativists" often justified their positions with arguments bases on self-evidence and what they perceived to be irreducible moral principles. I see the entire spectrum on both sides of that conflict.
