WSJ - HK's Pacific Century Insur Sale By PCRD Still Undecided

August 22, 2001
Dow Jones Newswires

HONG KONG -- Pacific Century Insurance (H.PCI) said Thursday that its controlling shareholder Singapore-based Pacific Century Regional Development (P.PCR) is still in preliminary negotiations about a possible sale of its insurance arm.

The statement comes in the wake of market speculation that Richard Li's Singapore-based unit would use funds from the sale of Pacific Century Insurance to pay off debt at Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCW), which is also controlled by Li.

The company said Pacific Century Regional Development hasn't yet decided to sell its 44.8% stake in the Hong Kong insurer.

"No decision has yet been taken by Pacific Century Regional Development to dispose of its interest" in the unit, it said.
