Telstra, Keppel: No comments on stalled M1 talks

MELBOURNE--Telstra Corp Ltd was quiet on a Wednesday report which said talks between its mobile joint venture with Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd for a stake in Singapore's MobileOne Asia Pte Ltd had been suspended.

The Australian Financial Review newspaper said no deal was likely to come to fruition for at least a month, as the Telstra/PCCW joint venture--Regional Wireless Co--was not prepared to pay the price demanded for M1.

A spokeswoman for Telstra declined to comment on the report.

Regional Wireless Co, 60 percent owned by Telstra and 40 percent by PCCW, is bidding against Malaysia's Maxis Telecommunications Bhd for M1, Singapore's second largest cellular operator, as earlier reported.

M1 is held by Keppel T&T (35 percent), Singapore Press Holdings (35 percent), C&W (15 percent) and PCCW (15 percent).

When contacted, a Keppel spokesperson declined to comment on the Australian Financial Review report. The spokesperson also would not reveal when the deal would be finalized.
