3M microchip package to speed networks
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co.(NYSE:MMM - news), 3M, announced on Friday a new integrated circuit package to speed computer and telecommunications networks by pumping data into and out of microchips at twice current top speeds.

The company aims to grow the business from tens of millions of dollars now to hundreds of millions in the next few years, said Paul Fischer, head of 3M Microelectronic Packaging Project.

Microchips are improving quickly and so must the packages that hold them in networks, Fischer said. ``This will allow this thing (the package) to keep pace with the whole next generation of silicon that is expected over the next few years,'' he said.

The new package will handle 40 gigabits of data per second compared to 10-20 gigabits in the current generation, he said. The new speed is more than a million times faster than a 28.8 kilobit modem used in many home computers today.

``They are used pervasively in any of the high speed, high bandwidth places on the network,'' Fischer said.

The key to the package is that it maintains a steady voltage at extremely high speeds, he said. Data is transmitted in flashes of electricity, which can be corrupted by power fluctuations.

The packages, which will cost about $10-$80, will be ready for sale in about the first quarter of next year and then ship in volume after a year, he said.

3M shares rose $2.26 to $110.61 on Friday.
