Philips' Kleisterlee Sees Markets Stabilizing

Dutch group Philips Electronics' Chief Executive Gerard Kleisterlee believes he sees signs of stabilization in the markets in which his company operates. He said this was especially the case for the semiconductor market in which book-to-bill ratios--the proportion of orders to revenues--were finally stabilizing. Geographically, Kleisterlee said Philips had felt the effects of the global slowdown more particularly in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Korea--economies in which it has a "reasonable presence" and which are large suppliers to the U.S. PC and telecoms industry. Philips, Europe's largest consumer electronics group, is Europe's number three chip-maker, specialising in semiconductors for the telecoms and household appliances markets and with no exposure to the personal computer (PC) market. Its semiconductor sales declined by 23 percent in the second quarter from year-earlier levels.More...
