That's a wonderful post. I just noticed the new header, and like it a lot, too.

And I read about that study too. The people who were instructed to smile as much as possible all day every day for no reason, just smile smile smile, were, at the end of the test period, MUCH happier people than the group who received no such instruction.

And there are health implications for laughing a lot. I forget what they are, but i'm glad we laugh a lot around here. Heart disease benefits, maybe. Or maybe life expectancy in general.

Right now I'm wide awake and feel like chopping next winter's firewood tonight. And cleaning the chimney.

It is so weird that the doctor didn't mention this.

Thank God I have sleeping pills here. I am going to go listen to Wodehouse and take 9 or 10 of them.

*Kiss Kiss*

I know I've mentioned before that simply smiling at people can change your brain pathways.

I remember that discussion, now that you mention it.

I suppose civility is not the ultimate value for me

It's not for me either. The reason I focus so much on it here at SI is that it's the key value for the continued viability of these boards. In the larger world, it's importance is as a foundation for interaction in our increasingly diverse world. There may be lots of things more inherently valuable than civility, but I don't see how we can accomplish any of them without it.

While in pursuit of something else this morning, I came upon some words on this topic:

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
